2018 was an exceptionally long and late vintage and that is immediately evident in the ripe bold character of this Syrah. Although this wine does have our Syrah’s typical violets, white pepper, and leather, the fruit is decidedly darker giving way to ripe blackberries, and fig. The tannins are gripping at first but lengthen as they melt on the palate. Two years in barrel have added to the palate aromas of vanilla, cedar, and clove.

Winemaker's Reserve: Right out of the bottle, the High Ground displays complex and spicy aromas of wild berries, leather, and freshly cut violets. With aeration in the glass, more blue and black fruits emerge, balanced by Yorkville's signature acidity. Extended barrel age has added a layer of tannin that will help it age gracefully for many years into the future.

Winemaker's Reserve 10th Anniversary Re-release:
2012 High Ground is an event unto itself and would be best enjoyed over a long meal. This wine is immediately dark and brooding and takes some time to open-up but once it does show exquisite complexity. Tones of Cedar, and cracked pepper give way to dark cherry, blueberry, and dried rose petals and Spring violets. Due to extended barrel-age this wine appears smooth and silky on the palate.

Although this is a particularly warm vintage these grapes still produced a wine which expresses the cool climate in which they are grown. The nose burst with a ripe mixture huckleberry, blueberry, and plum with a backdrop of violet, pepper, and wet earth. The hallmark acidity of this wine is again present on the palate and complemented by a touch of “grit” provided by the small percentage of Petite Sirah blended into the wine. Two years in barrel has softened the palate and added aromas of vanilla, cedar, and clove.
